Bird Proofing Solar Panels: What North Wales Owners Should Know

Why birds nest under panels

The gap between a roof-mounted panel and the tiles is close to purpose-built for nesting: sheltered from rain and wind, warmed from above by the panel, raised away from predators, and undisturbed. Pigeons are the classic occupant in towns, and once a pair settles, others follow the same roof.

The North Wales twist: gulls as well as pigeons

Along the coast, from Rhyl and Llandudno round to Bangor and across Anglesey, herring gulls and lesser black-backed gulls treat rooftops as cliff faces. Gulls are bigger, louder, more territorial in the breeding season and messier than pigeons, and coastal properties see panel problems from them that inland guides never mention. If you are on the coast, proofing is worth thinking about before the first nest, not after.

What the law says

This is where DIY removal goes wrong. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, all wild birds, their eggs and their active nests are protected. Once a nest is in use, it cannot legally be removed until the birds have finished with it, and gulls have additional protections that can require a licence even outside an active nest.

How proofing works

The standard approach is a steel mesh skirt clipped around the panel perimeter, closing the gap without touching the roof covering or voiding panel warranties. Spikes on ridge lines and dormers deter perching, and a panel clean at the same visit restores any lost output. Retrofitting mesh needs roof access, which is why the scaffolding often costs as much as the materials.

The cheapest time to proof is at installation

If panels are going on a coastal or town-centre roof, fitting mesh while the scaffolding is already up costs a fraction of a retrofit visit later. It is worth raising at the survey stage for any new installation in a gull or pigeon area, and it is one of the questions we would rather you ask early.
