Unlock the True Potential of Your Solar Array

If you installed solar panels between 2010 and 2020, you are likely part of the "Export Generation." You generate free, green power during the day, but send up to 70% of it back to the National Grid. By the time you return home in the evening, the sun has set, forcing you to buy electricity back at peak market rates.

The Problem

Most older systems export 50-70% of their generation. You are effectively giving away free energy.

The Solution

We retro-fit a battery to any existing solar PV array. This stores your surplus energy for evening use.

The "Feed-in Tariff" Safety Check

Homeowners often worry that modifying their system will void their lucrative FIT payments. This is a myth.

Generation Payments: Safe

Your payments are based on your "Total Generation Meter." We install the battery after this meter. You get paid for every unit you generate, whether you store it or use it.

Export Payments: Optimised

Most older systems use "Deemed Export" (paid for 50% regardless of actual export). You keep this payment AND keep the physical energy. It is financially superior.

0% VAT on Batteries

As of 2024/25, the UK government applies 0% VAT to retrofit battery storage. You pay no tax on the hardware or the installation labour.

How a Retrofit Pays for Itself

Adding a battery isn't just about "saving solar." It opens up a second revenue stream called Grid Arbitrage.

1. Solar Self-Consumption

Instead of buying power at 24p/kWh (average peak rate), you use your stored solar power for free.

  • Summer: 100% of evening use covered by solar.
  • Shoulder Months: 60-80% coverage.

2. Winter "Force Charging"

In winter, when solar is low, you charge the battery from the grid at night using a smart tariff (e.g., Octopus Agile or Go) for as little as 7p/kWh.

  • Benefit: You then discharge this cheap power during the day when prices are high.
  • Result: Massive savings even without sunshine.

AC Coupling vs DC Coupling

We use two engineering methods to integrate storage, depending on your current inverter's health.

Method A

AC Coupling (The Add-On)

We keep your existing solar inverter and install a standalone battery unit alongside it.

  • Compatibility: Universal (works with Solis, SMA, SolarEdge).
  • Disruption: Minimal (no cable re-runs).
  • Product Example: GivEnergy All-in-One.
RECOMMENDED
Method B

DC Coupling (The Upgrade)

We remove your ageing inverter and replace it with a modern Hybrid Inverter.

  • Efficiency: ~97% (Less conversion loss).
  • Benefit: New 10-year warranty & app control.
  • Product Example: SigenStor 5-in-1.

Technical Compatibility & Safety

Supported Inverter Brands

Our retrofit solutions are tested and compatible with all major legacy inverter brands found in the UK, including:

  • ✔ SMA Sunny Boy
  • ✔ SolarEdge
  • ✔ Solis
  • ✔ Growatt
  • ✔ Fronius
  • ✔ Mastervolt
  • ✔ GoodWe
  • ✔ Enphase (Microinverters)

Installation Location Rules

To comply with PAS 63100 fire safety regulations, we assess the best location for your battery:

  • Garage / Utility Room: The ideal location. Safe, accessible, and temperature stable.
  • Loft Spaces: Generally not recommended due to fire safety access and temperature extremes affecting battery life.
  • Outdoor: Possible with IP65-rated units like Tesla Powerwall or SigenStor.

The Retrofit Workflow

1

Photo Survey

Send us a photo of your inverter. We check compatibility remotely.

2

DNO Approval

We handle the G98/G99 grid application paperwork for you.

3

Installation

Installed in 1 day. Power is off for less than 60 minutes.

4

Smart Setup

We set up the app and link it to smart tariffs like Agile.

Common Questions

Is my solar system too old to add a battery?

No. We can retrofit batteries to systems installed as far back as 2010. If your inverter is extremely old or inefficient, we simply replace it (Method B) as part of the upgrade.

Will the battery work in a power cut?

It depends on the hardware. Standard AC batteries often do not. However, if you choose a system with "Emergency Power Supply" (EPS) capability—such as the SigenStor or Tesla Powerwall—we can wire it to keep essential circuits running.

How much does it cost?

Retrofit pricing varies by capacity, but typically starts from £4,500 (Supply & Install). This includes 0% VAT. To get an exact figure for your home, please request a free quote.

Summary: Is a Retrofit Right for You?

For most systems installed between 2010 and 2020, adding storage is the logical next step to reduce reliance on the grid. It allows you to utilise the energy you are currently exporting, without affecting your Feed-in Tariff.

OUR SERVICES

What We Offer

Solar

Solar panels generate clean, renewable electricity that can help reduce your energy bills and carbon emissions.

When linked with a battery storage system, any excess energy produced can be saved and used later, allowing you to maximise your solar investment and achieve long-term savings.

Battery Storage

Battery storage lets you take control of how and when you use your solar energy.

By storing electricity that would otherwise go unused, you can reduce your dependence on the grid, lower your energy bills, and increase your overall energy resilience. It's a smart solution for getting the most out of your solar system.

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps offer an efficient way to warm your home using the energy already in the air.

They transfer this heat into water, delivering reliable heating and hot water throughout the year. When powered by solar and supported by battery storage, heat pumps help create a fully optimised low-carbon energy system.
