Not every home suits a full central heating overhaul, and not every room needs one. These recent installs show how an air-to-air heat pump heats the rooms you actually live in for less, and doubles as air conditioning when summer arrives.

01Why people are choosing air-to-air

An air-to-air heat pump moves heat rather than generating it, which is why it typically delivers three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity it uses. Compare that with a plug-in electric radiator giving you one for one, and the appeal is obvious for conservatories, extensions, garden rooms and offices that the main heating never quite reaches.

The same unit runs in reverse in summer, cooling the room instead. One system, comfortable all year, and our team is fully qualified to design and fit them.

Air-to-air is not the same as an air source heat pump that runs your radiators. An air-to-water system replaces a boiler and heats your hot water too; air-to-air warms the air in the rooms where the indoor units sit and does not heat water. If you want to replace a boiler for the whole house, our heat pumps page covers air source systems and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

02Recent installs

  • Wall-mounted indoor units for whole-room heating and cooling with a single discreet panel
  • Floor consoles that sit where a radiator would, a popular choice in living rooms and older properties
  • Outdoor units mounted on anti-vibration feet or brackets, positioned to keep noise away from windows and neighbours
  • Multi-room systems running several indoor units from one outdoor unit

Three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity, and in July it becomes the air conditioning everyone wishes they had.

03What it costs and where grants stand

Air-to-air systems are among the cheapest ways to heat a single room or extension, and installation is far less disruptive than wet central heating work: most single-room installs are done in a day. On grants: air-to-air heat pumps now qualify for £2,500 through the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme for homes, but schemes change. We will give you the current position straight when you ask, not a sales pitch version of it.

What this means for you

If there is a room in your home or business that is too cold in January and too hot in July, this is usually the cheapest proper fix. No pipework through the house, no boiler upgrade, just a neat unit on the wall and one outside.

Extensions & garden rooms

The rooms the central heating never reaches properly. A single air-to-air unit heats them efficiently all winter and cools them all summer.

Businesses

Offices, salons, shops and server rooms need reliable temperature control. Air-to-air gives you both directions from one system, with low running costs.

Whole-home comfort

Multi-split systems run several rooms from one outdoor unit, a flexible option for bungalows, flats and well-insulated homes.

We will always give you clear, ranged numbers based on your actual usage, not brochure figures. If air-to-air is the wrong tool for your property, we will tell you what the right one is.
